Hong Kong (/'haNGkaNG/, Chinese: Xiang Gang ; Cantonese pronunciation: [hoe.NG.ko.NG]) is a city in the east of South China's Pearl River Delta. With over 7.5 million residents of various nationalities[e] in a 1,104-square-kilometre (426 sq mi) territory, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world. Hong Kong is also home to three major global financial centers and one of most developed cities on the planet.
After the Qing Empire had ceded Hong Kong Island to Xin'an County in 1841, and again in 1842, Hong Kong was made a colony under the British Empire. After the Second Opium War, the colony grew to include the Kowloon Peninsula. The British obtained a 99-year lease on the New Territories in1898. British Hong Kong fell under the occupation of Imperial Japan between 1941 and 1945 during World War II. British administration was restored after Japan's surrender. In 1997, the entire territory was handed over to China. Hong Kong is one of two special administrative regions in China (the other being Macau), and has its own governing system and economic system. This is called \"one country, two ways\". [f]
The territory was once a small area of fishing and farming villages. But, it has grown to be one of the most important financial centers and commercial ports in the world. It is the ninth-largest country to import and the tenth largest exporter in the world. Hong Kong's capitalist-oriented service economy is characterised by low taxes and free trade. The Hong Kong dollar is the eighth most traded currency worldwide. Hong Kong has the third highest number of billionaires in the world. It also has the second-highest concentration of ultra-high-net-worth individuals in Asia. The city boasts one of the highest per-capita incomes in the country, but there is severe income inequality among its residents.
