DTU Risø Campus

DTU Risø Campus.

Located on the peninsula Risø in Roskilde Fjord 7 km north of the historic town of Roskilde and 40 km west of Copenhagen.

Riso Campus is composed of buildings that are placed in groups on a 262 hectare site. Preben Hansen, Paul Nieport and the standard one-story buildings were designed by them.

An avenue of poplars line DTU Risø Campus’ ‘main street’ which runs from the entrance close to the highway to the head of the peninsula. The avenue was laid out in 1957 by the Danish landscape architects C.Th. Sørensen - the most celebrated landscape architect of his time.

Riso's origins date back to the mid-1950s, when Niels Bohr, a world-renowned physicist, played a key role in the creation of the \"Research Establishment Riso\", one of the largest single investments in Danish research. It was created to fulfill Niels Bohr’s vision of peaceful nuclear energy production.

Riso was officially inaugurated in June 1958. The first 30 years of Riso's existence, the focus was on ensuring a stable and secure supply of energy. The Danish energy policy no longer included nuclear power and security of supply was the sole objective.

Research is increasingly focusing on sustainable energy sources, which could eventually meet global demand and offer opportunities for Danish industry.
