The University of Vienna's Department of Contemporary History (German: Institut fur Zeitgeschichte der Universitat Wien), is a scientific institution that studies contemporary history. The University of Vienna's Alsergrund district is the home of the institute. The institute has around 30 scientists (as of 2006), with half of them being on the University of Vienna staff and half being Privatdozenten, who are assigned to it. [1] The institute is a member the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies. [2].

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Education established the Institute of Contemporary History on 3 June 1966.<br/ >Ludwig Jedlicka was co-founder of DOW (documentation centre of Austrian resistance) and director of Austrian Institute for Contemporary History (since 1961). He became the first director of this new institute. Erika Weinzierl was his successor. She developed research in the areas of antisemitism, exile and emigration during Nazism. [1] later directors were Gerhard Botz, Friedrich Stadler and Oliver Rathkolb. Johanna Gehmacher, the current director of this institute, has been in office since 2012.
