Palais Auersperg was originally known as Palais Rosenkavalier. It is a Baroque palace located at Auerspergstrasse 1 (or the Josefstadt) in Vienna, Austria. [1]

Palais Auersperg was constructed on the plot of former Rottenhof between 1706-1710. It was designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, and Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt for Hieronymus Capecede Rofrano. Johann Christian Neupauer modified the middle section of this palace between 1720-1723.

Prince Joseph of Saxe-Hildburghausen began to use the palace for his winter residence in 1749. Giuseppe Bonno was appointed musical director of the palace. Weekly music classes were held in the winter between 1754-1761. He rented the palace, and Christoph Willibald Gluck was hired to conduct the concerts.

The palace was purchased by Prince Johann Adam of Auersperg in 1777. He was a friend and confidant to Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresia. The palace was renamed Palais Auersperg in 1786. It was the venue for several important and well-known musical events.

Johann Adam of Auersperg was still childless after his second marriage and his children from his first marriage died. He adopted his nephew Carl Auersperg (1750-1822). In 1795, Carl accepted his inheritance. Carl and Josepha, their marriage, remained childless. In 1812, they adopted Prince Vinzens Ausersperg. He accepted his inheritance in 1817. Gustav, Prince of Vasa, a Swedish royal family member, remained at Palais Auersperg during the period 1827-1837. His inheritance was contested in Sweden.
