Austrian Academy of Sciences, German: Osterreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften (OAW), is a legal entity that falls under the protection of the Republic of Austria. The Academy's statutes state that its mission is to promote science and humanities in all respects and in all fields, especially in fundamental research.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, an inspiration of the Royal Society and French Academy of Sciences, suggested in 1713 the establishment of an Academy. On 14 May 1847, Imperial Patent established the \"Kaiserliche Akademie der Wissenschaften\" in Wien. It began extensive research quickly. The academy began its humanities research by publishing important historical documents from Austria. Natural science research also covered many topics.

The legal foundation of the academy in the newly established First Austrian Republic was guaranteed by the 1921 federal law. It was the country's most important institution in non-university basic science research from the mid-1960s. [citation needed]

The academy is also an educational society. Its past members include Theodor Billroth and Christian Doppler. [1]

25 research institutes are managed by the academy. A reorganization in 2012 saw the outsourcing of several institutes to universities and mergers. The academy's institutes are split into two major divisions, one for mathematics and natural sciences (mathematisch-naturwissenschaftliche Klasse) and one for humanities and social sciences (philosophisch-historische Klasse).
