We are deeply sorry to announce that Ben Mottelson, our distinguished professor emeritus, has died on Friday, May 13th. Ben was a remarkable physicist as well as a human being. Since its founding in Copenhagen in 1957, he has been a Nordita professor. His contributions to Nordita's development over many decades have been immense. We are thinking of his family and friends as they grieve.

Ben was a professor at Nordita and the Niels Bohr institute (NBI), where he worked for most of his professional career. He developed a model that combined many aspects of Niels Bohr's liquid drop model with shell effects. The model combined elements of Niels Bohr's liquid drop model with shell effect, and Ben was awarded the Nobel prize in Physics in 1975. Ben was a significant influence on his contemporaries and the younger generation in quantum and nuclear many-body Physics. Later, he focused his efforts on metallic clusters and quantum dots, as well as ultracold radioactive gases. He also worked with Ole Ulfbeck and Aage Bohr on the foundations for quantum physics.
