It became a landmark in Eindhoven where Philips was located at the time. In 1989, the museum was closed and the building was reopened in 1998 as a conference center.

Its futuristic design, which resembles a landing flying saucer, makes it unique. Leo de Bever, Louis Christiaan Kalff and James Gardner designed it. Kalff and De Bever only had two requirements for the design. It had to be spectacular and be able to host exhibitions. [1]

The concrete dome measures 77m (253 ft), and is supported by reinforcing steel bars that span 169 km (105 mi).

The innovative interactive exhibits at the Evoluon attracted many visitors in the 1960s and 1970s. The original museum was closed in 1989 after it was outperformed by science museums in other cities. It was transformed into a conference center, which opened in 1998.

The UK's Evoluon is most well-known because Bert Haanstra's short film, simply Evoluon, was made by Philips. It was a trade test film in colour that was shown on BBC television between 1968 and 1972.

The Evoluon was used by Kraftwerk to stage four 3D-concerts in October 2013. Each event was attended by 1,200 people. Ralf Hutter, a key member of the band, chose the venue because it had a retro-futuristic appearance. Spacelab was performed live using 3D-visuals crafted by Ralf Hutter of the saucer section that descends from space. [2]
