Van Nelle Factory - Wikipedia

National monument[edit]. External links[edit].

It is a prime example in the International Style, which is based on constructivist architecture. Since 2014, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. [1] Several prominent architects immediately after the construction described it as \"the most beautiful spectacle in the modern age\" (Le Corbusier, 1932) or \"a poem of steel and glass\" (1930), according to Robertson. [2]

Leendert van der Vlugt, an architect from Brinkman & Van der Vlugt in collaboration with J.G. Wiebenga was a specialist in reinforced concrete constructions at the time and constructed between 1925 and 1931. This is a Nieuwe Bouwen example, which is modern Dutch architecture. Cees van der Leeuw was the co-owner and director of Van Nelle. He commissioned it on behalf of his owners. Van der Leeuw, Bertus Sonneveld and Matthijs deBruyn, both co-owners of Van Nelle, were so impressed with Van der Vlugt's skills that they ordered him to design and construct private houses in Rotterdam, Schiedam, and the surrounding areas between 1928-1932. It is home to more than 35,000 visitors each year, and has been fully restored.

It was a factory that processed coffee, tea, tobacco, and then added chewing gum, cigarettes and instant pudding. In 1996, the operation was stopped. It was originally known as Van Nelle Design Factory (or Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek) in Dutch, until 1996. In recent years, the focus on architects and design tenants has been lost. The building now houses many companies as well as a co-working space. Some areas can be used for events, meetings, and conventions. [3]
