CaixaForum Barcelona is an arts and cultural center located in Barcelona, Catalonia. It is located in Montjuic, in an old Modernist textile factory that Josep Puig-i Cadafalch designed. [2] The art center was opened in 2002 after a renovation of the building. Since then, it has hosted temporary art exhibitions as well as cultural events. [3]

It was originally built as a textile factory for Casimir Casaramona, i Puigcercos. The famous Catalan Modernism architect Josep Puig I Cadafalch designed it. [2]It was named the \"Casaramona Factory\" and was completed in 1911. In the same year, it won the City Council award for the best industrial building. [2] Although the factory was closed in 1919, it was reopened as an exhibit space for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition.

The building was originally used by the Spanish Armed Police Corps as a cavalry barracks. It was then used until 1963 when \"la Caixa\", a banking foundation, bought it. It was opened in February 2002 as a cultural centre. [3] Prior to the opening, the building was renovated.[4] A new entrance was constructed by Arata Isozaki (a Japanese architect). This involved firing 100,000 bricks to match originals. [2]

It has nearly three acres of exhibition space, an auditorium, classrooms, and a restaurant. The basement lobby is decorated with a Sol LeWitt painting. Visitors then descend via an escalator to reach the exhibition spaces at the ground floor. [5]
