Built between 1901 and 1930, the former Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (Catalan pronunciation of: [uspi’tal d@ l@ ’sant@ i?sam paw], English: Hospital of the Holy Cross and Saint Paul), is located in the El Guinardo neighborhood of Barcelona, Catalonia. It is one the most famous works by Lluis Domenech, a Catalan modernisme architect. In 1978, the complex was designated a Conjunto Historico. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Palau de la Musica Catalana in 1998. [1]

Sant Pau, which is composed of 12 pavilions linked by long underground galleries in its large green space, is the largest Art Nouveau-style complex. [2] The hospital was fully functional until June 2009 when it was replaced by a new one. It then underwent restoration to become a museum and cultural centre. The building is a significant architectural and historical masterpiece. It also provides workspaces for prominent social organizations like WHO, Banco Farmaceutico and Barcelona Health Hub. [3] The cultural centre also houses a historical archive that contains records and documents from remarkable occurrences relating to the hospital as well as the city. They are available for visitors and offer information to researchers and users with the information, reprographics and reading room. [4]

The 26 current buildings of the hospital [5] date back to the 20th century. However, the Hospital de la Santa Creu (the name that includes the last part, \"Sant Pau\") was established in 1401 after six small, medieval hospitals were merged. [6] The hospital's old buildings in the middle of Barcelona date back to the 15th century. They now house the Escola Massana art school and Biblioteca di Catalunya (National Library of Catalonia).
