The Autonomous University of Madrid (Spanish Universidad Autonoma de Madrid or UAM), also known simply as la Autonoma is a Spanish public university that is located in Madrid, Spain. It was established in 1968 along with the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Barcelona. UAM is widely regarded as one of Europe's most prestigious universities. UAM is Spain's top-ranked university according to the highly respected QS World University Rankings 2022.
The university's campus covers a tract of rural land covering 650 acres (260 ha). It is located mainly around the metropolitan area of Madrid. It was founded in 1968. The main campus, Cantoblanco is close to the cities of Alcobendas and San Sebastian de los Reyes. The majority of UAM's facilities are located on the Cantoblanco Campus. It is located 15km (9.3 miles) north of Madrid. The campus covers an area of more than 2,200,000 m2 (24,000,000. sq ft). Nearly 770,000 m2 (8.300,000 sq. ft.) of these are urbanized, with about a third being in gardens. UAM offers 94 doctorate degrees in all the university studies.
