Hanover (/’haenoUv@r/, –n@v-/ German: Hannover [ha’no:fa] Listen; Low German: Hannober), is the capital and the largest city in the German state Lower Saxony. With 534,049 inhabitants (2020), it is the 13th largest city in Germany and the third-largest in Northern Germany after Hamburg or Bremen. The urban area of Hannover includes the towns of Garbsen Langenhagen, Laatzen, and has an estimated population of 791,000 (2018). [3] Hannover Region is home to approximately 1.16 Million people (2019). [4]

The city lies at the confluence of the River Leine and its tributary the Ihme, in the south of the North German Plain, and is the largest city in the Hannover-Braunschweig-Gottingen-Wolfsburg Metropolitan Region. After Bremen, Dortmund, Essen, and Hamburg, it is the fifth-largest Low German dialect city.

Hannover was the capital of Lower Saxony before it became the capital of Lower Saxony. Hannover was the family seat of the Hannoverian Kings of Great Britain and Ireland from 1714 to 1837, when it was united by personal union. They were known as the dukes of Brunswick-Luneburg, later called the Elector of Hannover.

The city is a major crossing point of railway lines and motorways (Autobahnen), connecting European main lines in both the east-west (Berlin-Ruhr area/Dusseldorf/Cologne) and north-south (Hamburg-Frankfurt/Stuttgart/Munich) directions. The ninth busiest airport in Germany is Hannover Airport, located north of the city. It can be found in Langenhagen. One of the most prominent institutes of higher learning in the city is the Hannover Medical School (Medizinische Hochschule Hannover), which is one of Germany's top medical schools. It also houses the Klinikum der Medizinischen Hochschule Hannover and Leibniz University Hannover. International Neuroscience Institute is also located in the city.
