Paris (French pronunciation: \"paRi\") (listen) is the capital of France and the most populous. It has a population of approximately 2,165,423 people in 2019. It covers an area of over 105km2 (41 sq mi) [4] and it will be the 34th most populated city worldwide in 2020. Paris is often referred to as \"the capital of the universe\" since the 17th century. It has been one the most important centres for finance, diplomacy and commerce around the globe. The Gothic royal chapel of Sainte-Chapelle is another popular tourist site. It was built for the Paris Universal Exposition of1889 and features the Grand Palais (and Petit Palais) as well as the Arc de Triomphe, which can be found on the Champs-Elysees. Montmartre, with its rich artistic history and Basilica of Sacre-Coeur, is also a popular tourist spot. [16]
