The Palacio de la Magdalena (Spanish for Magdalena Palace) is a palace in Santander (Cantabria), Spain. It was built by popular subscription. The Spanish Royal Family received it as a summer home. Between 1909 and 1911, it was constructed by Javier Gonzalez Riancho & Gonzalo Bringas Vegas. It is located on the Magdalena Peninsula, where once stood the Fort of San Salvador de Hano. This protected the bay's entrance. It has been home to the Menendez Pelayo International University's summer courses since 1932. The palace and peninsula were purchased by the Santander City Council in 1977.

Santander's local government initiated construction of the palace in 1908 to provide a temporary residence for the Spanish royal family. Popular subscriptions from the local population provided funding. [1]

Javier Gonzalez de Riancho, Gonzalo Bringas Vega and Gonzalo Gonzalo Bringas were responsible for the design and construction of this palace. Construction was completed in 1912. King Alfonso XIII first visited the Palacio de la Magdalena with his family on August 4, 1913. Construction was completed in 1912. The palace was used by the royal family as a base for many recreational and sporting activities. Sometimes, the king also held government meetings on the property. In 1931, the Second Spanish Republic was proclamated. [1]
