The Miramar Palace, Spanish: Palacio de Miramar; Basque: Miramar jauregia), is a late 19th century palace that can be found in the La Concha Bay, San Sebastian, Basque Country. It was constructed in 1893 by the Spanish Royal Family. The project of Selden Wornum (1889) inspired it. [1][2]

The relationship between San Sebastian, Spain and the Spanish Royal Crown started with Isabella II, Queen of Spain. She began to spend summers in San Sebastian in the middle of the 19th century to enjoy the sea baths. When Maria Christina of Austria, daughter of Alfonso XII (Spanish) and Maria Christina of Austria became widowed, the bond between San Sebastian and Spain grew stronger. Maria Christina, an English architect Selden Wornum, ordered a Royal Summer House for summer visits by the Royal Family. The location for the Palace was an estate overlooking La Concha Bay, where the Monastery of San Sebastian El Antiguo was located. The estate was purchased by the Queen from the Count of Moriana. The estate was expanded with an adjoining estate where El Antiguo Church was situated -the Church had be moved to another site-, as well as other small estates. Although the Palace was completed in 1893, a new building called the Pabellon del Principe was built in 1920. A false tunnel was required to cross the trams during construction. The tunnel runs under the Palace gardens.
