The Pontifical Urban University (also known as the Urbaniana in Latin after the names of the university's two campuses) is a pontifical university that falls under the jurisdiction of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. The university has the mission to train priests, religious brothers, sisters and lay people to serve as missionaries. It is situated on Rome's Janiculum Hill, an extraterritorial property belonging to the Holy See.

From its beginnings, the Urbaniana has always been an academic institution with a missionary character that has served the Catholic Church through the formation of missionaries and experts in the area of Missiology or other disciplines, necessary in the evangelizational activity of the Church.

The university's origins can be traced back to Pope Urban VIII, who established the college in 1627 with his papal bull Immortalis dei Filius. Juan Bautista Vives (a spanish prelate) suggested to Pope Urban that a central seminary be established for missions. This would allow young priests from both countries that do not have a national college and those that do have one. The establishment of a central international college would enable priests to meet and develop mutually beneficial relationships with other countries. From the name of its founder, the Collegium Urbanum was named after the college. It was placed under the direct supervision of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples (now the Congregation for the Propaganda). [3]
