Nairobi (/naI’roUbi/ Ny-ROH-bee), is Kenya's capital and largest city. Named after the Maasai phrase Enkare Nyorobi which means \"place of cool water\", which is a reference to Nairobi River that flows through it, the name derives its origins. In 2019, the city had a population totalling 4,397,073, while the metropolitan area had 9,354,580. It is often referred to as the Green City in the Sun. [6]

The colonial authorities of British East Africa founded Nairobi in 1899 as a depot for the Uganda-Kenya Railway. [7] Nairobi grew quickly to become the capital of Kenya in 1907. [8] In 1963, Nairobi was made the capital of the Republic of Kenya. [9] The colonial period in Kenya saw the city become a hub for sisal, coffee and tea production. [10][11] At 1,680m (5,510 feet) elevation, the city is located in the central part of Kenya.

The 2019 census showed that there were 4,397.073 people living within 696 km2 (269 sq miles) of Nairobi. [12]

Nairobi is the home to the Kenyan Parliament Buildings. It also hosts over 100 international companies and organizations including the United Nations Office at Nairobi and the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment).
