San Servolo, an Italian island located in the Venetian Lagoon to the southeast from San Giorgio Maggiore, is called. The island was once home to Benedictine monks and later became an asylum for the mentally ill. It is now home the Venice International University museum and the prestigious International College of Ca' Folicari University. [1]

This island was home to Benedictine monks since at least the eighth century. They remained there for nearly five hundred years. Later, they were joined by nuns who fled the convents Saints Leone & Basso on Malamocco after the latter was destroyed by a tsunami. The nuns left at the start of the 15th century, but were quickly replaced by a few dozen nuns fleeing the Turkish invasion in Crete. At the start of the 18th century, however, there were only a handful of them left. Soon after, the Senate of the Republic of Venice named San Servolo the location of a new military hospital. This was necessary due to the ongoing war against the Turks. Later, the hospital was used for mental health care.

In 1978, government-instituted reforms of psychiatric treatment resulted in the closure of the hospital. In 1978, the Venice government created the \"Istituto per le Ricerche e gli Studi sull'Emarginazione Sociale e Culturale\" on the island to preserve documents related to the history of the psychiatric institution. In 1995, the Venice International University was established on San Servolo. It is a centre for education and research that collaborates with ten universities around the globe. The island has been home to the Ca'Foscari International College since 2012, a state-funded honors college that is geared towards students from multicultural and multilingual backgrounds. [1]
