University of Salerno.

The University of Salerno (\"UNISA\") has a strong connection to the Schola Medica Salernitana, the oldest academic institution on the Old Continent. The School was founded in the eighth century and reached its peak during the 10th to 13th centuries.

Its lectures covered medicine as well as philosophy, theology, and law. Salerno was awarded the title of Hippocratica Civitas (City of Hippocrates), in honor of the famed Greek physician and writer. The school was closed in 1811 by royal decree under Joachim Murat's Napoleonic government.

The Istituto Universitario di Magistero Giovanni Cuomo was established in 1944 by a decree of king Victor Emmanuel III. This became state-owned in 1968, changing its name into Facolta di Magistero dell'Universita degli Studi di Salerno.

Within a few years, the Faculty was joined by many others, which contributed to the formation of a major university. The Faculty of Arts was established in 1969. This was followed by the Faculty of Economics (1970); the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, and the Faculty of Law (1972); the Full Degree in Engineering (1983); the Faculty of Pharmacy (1991); the Faculty of Political Science (1992); the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature (1996); finally, the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery (2006).

The University was established in 1987. It is located in Fisciano just a few kilometers from Salerno at the intersection of two motorway intersections. This makes it easy and centrally located. It covers approximately 100,000 square meters and is an extremely large complex in constant expansion. The university is organized as a campus, which includes the campuses of Fisciano, Baronissi, and offers modern facilities and efficient services in orientation, teaching, learning, and leisure activities. It currently has around 40,000 students hailing from Calabria, Calabria, Campania and Apulia.
