Geneva (/dZI’ni:v@/jin-EE–v@?[4] French : Geneve [Z@nev] [listen]) [note 1] Geneva is the second-most populous Swiss city (after Zurich). It also happens to be the largest city in Romandy, the French-speaking region of Switzerland. It is located in the south-west of the country at the point where Lake Geneva exits the Rhone. It is also the capital of the Republic of Geneva and Canton of Geneva.
In 2019, the population of Geneva (ville de Geneve), was 201,818 (Jan. estimation). [6] However, the Canton of Geneva, the city and its nearest Swiss suburbs, had a population of 499.480 (Jan. 2019 estimates).[5] The Canton of Geneva, which includes the city itself and the closest Swiss exurbs, had a population of over 246 km2 (95.5 mi) [6] together with the French suburbs, exurbs, and located in the French department of Ain, and Haute-Savoie-Savoie-Savoie-Savoie-Savoie-Savoie-Savolves) and covers over 2,292 (2,292 km228226229220 mi) and is a totalling a large (885 sq mi) and has a population of 1,032,29292 km2 (985 sq mi) and 885 sq mi) and across-border area,[7]. The Canton of Geneva, Nyon District (in Vaud) and the Pole metropolitanin du Genevois francais have created the Grand Geneve (\"Greater Geneva\") in 2013. This federation of eight French intercommunal Councils has been responsible for organizing cooperation in the cross-border metro area of Geneva, in particular in metropolitan transports. [10] The Grand Geneve (GLCT) covers 1,996 km2 (771 mi)[11]. It had 1,025,316 inhabitants in January 2019 (Swiss census and estimates from France), with 58.5% living on Swiss territory and 41.5% living on French territory. [12]
