Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia and the largest municipality in Atlantic Canada. The 2021 Census showed that the municipality had a population of 439,819 [6] and 348,634 residents in its urban area. [3] The region municipality is made up of four municipalities that were merged in 1996: Halifax County, Dartmouth County, Bedford and Bedford.
Halifax is an important economic center in Atlantic Canada. It has a high concentration of private sector and government services. The Department of National Defence and Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia Health Authority and Saint Mary's University are major employers and economic generators. The municipality's rural areas are home to major resource industries such as agriculture, fishing, mining and forestry.
Mikmaki, the traditional ancestral lands for the Mikmaq peoples, is where Halifax is found. [7] Since before European arrivals in North America in 1400s and 1500s to establish fisheries, the Mi'kmaq lived in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. About 1000 Mi'kmaq were living in Nova Scotia at the Confederation of Canada.Kjipuktuk is the Mi'kmaq name of Halifax, which is pronounced \"chee-book-took\". [8] In Mi'kmaq, the name \"Great Harbour\" means \"Great Harbour\". [9]
