Vannes is a commune located in Brittany's Morbihan region. It was established over 2,000 years ago. [3]

Vannes is a name derived from the Veneti, an ancient seafaring Celtic tribe that lived in the southern part of Armorica in Gaul prior to the Roman invasions. It is possible that the region was involved in cross-channel trade for many years. This may have happened using hide boats or Ferriby Boats. This trade included wheat that was apparently grown in the Middle East. [5] Around 150 BC, evidence of trade (such a Gallo-Belgic coin) with the Thames estuary region of Great Britain increased dramatically. [6]

In 56 BC, Julius Caesar's fleet defeated the Veneti in front of Locmariaquer. Many of the Veneti were either killed or sold into slavery. In an area that had been owned by the Veneti, the Romans established Darioritum.

The remaining Gauls were either displaced or assimilated during the Saxon invasions of Britain in the 5th and 7th centuries. The town was known as Gwened by the Breton, also derived from Veneti, and was the centre of a independent principality or kingdom, sometimes called Bro-Wened (\"Vannes\"), or Bro-Ereg (\"landof Gwereg\"), after a prominent member its dynasty that claimed descent from Caradog Strongarm. In the 5th century, the diocese of Vannes was established. In 461, the Council of Vannes took place. Cornouaille was annexed by the realm in the 6th century, but Domnonia was unified under Saint Judicael and its king around 635.
