Helsinki (/helsINGki/ HEL'sink-ee, or /hel’sINGki/ (listen), hel-SINK–ee;[9][10] Finnish : ['helsiNGki] [listen]) is the capital, primate and most populous Finnish city. It is located on the coast of the Gulf of Finland and home to 658,864. [5][11] Helsinki's urban area is home to 1,268,296,[12] making them the most populous in Finland. Tampere, in the Pirkanmaa Region, is located 179 km (111 mi) north of Helsinki and the second-largest urban area in Finland. Helsinki is located 80 km (50 mi), north of Tallinn (Estonia), 400 km (250 miles) east of Stockholm (Sweden) and 300 km (191 mi) west from Saint Petersburg (Russia). These three cities have close historical ties to Helsinki.

Helsinki, together with Vantaa and Espoo (and the surrounding commuter towns [13]), forms the Greater Helsinki Metropolitan Area, which has a population exceeding 1.5 million. It is often considered Finland's only metropolitan area. It has more than one million inhabitants and is also the capital of the EU's northernmost member. Helsinki is third in the Nordic countries, after Stockholm and Copenhagen. Both Finnish and Swedish are official languages. The international Helsinki Airport is the nearest city to the city. It offers frequent flights to many European and Asian destinations.
