Fort Lauderdale (/lo:d@rdeIl/), is a city on the coast of Florida. It's located 30 miles (48km) north of Miami, along the Atlantic Ocean. It is the county seat and the largest city of Broward County. As per the 2020 Census, it was the tenth-largest city in Florida. Fort Lauderdale, along with Pompano Beach and Miami, is the principal city that makes up the Miami metropolitan area. It has a population total of 6,166,488.

Fort Lauderdale was built in 1838, and first incorporated in 1911. Its name is derived from a series forts that the United States constructed during the Second Seminole War. [10] Fort Lauderdale was named after Major William Lauderdale (1782-1838), the younger brother of Lieutenant Colonel James Lauderdale. The forts were abandoned at end of conflict, so development of the city didn't begin until 1950. There were three Fort Lauderdale forts built, including one at the fork, one at Tarpon Bend on New River between Rio Vista and Cole Hammock, and one near the Bahia Mar Marina. [11]

It is the third-largest cruise port in the United States, with nearly 4,000,000 passengers passing through Port Everglades each year.
