Newport, Rhode Island is a seaside American city located on Aquidneck Island in Newport County. It is located in Narragansett bay, 33 miles (53km) southeast of Providence. It is also 20 miles (32.5 km) south-east of Fall River, Massachusetts. It is 74 miles (119km) south of Boston and 180 miles (229 km) northeastern of New York City. It is a popular New England summer destination and is well-known for its historical mansions as well as its rich sailing history.

It hosted the first U.S. Open tournaments, in tennis and golf, and every America's Cup challenge between 1930 and 1983. Salve Regina University, Naval Station Newport and the United States Naval War College are also located there. This important Navy training center houses the Naval Undersea Warfare Center and the United States Naval War College. It was an important port city of the 18th century and has many Colonial-era buildings. [4]

It is the county seat for Newport County. The county has no other governmental functions than sheriff corrections and court administrative boundaries. It is best known as the site of the \"Summer White Houses\", which were built during the presidencys of Dwight D. Eisenhower (and John F. Kennedy). As of 2020, the population was 25,163. [5]
