Hernando is a city in, and the county seat of, DeSoto County, which is on the northwestern border of Mississippi, United States.[2] The population was 14,090 at the 2010 census,[3] up from 6,812 in 2000. DeSoto County is the second-most-populous county in the Memphis metropolitan area, which includes counties in Tennessee and Mississippi.[2]
From north to south, U.S. Route 51 runs parallel to the I-55 freeway. The I-69 freeway runs east to south through the city. Hernando's historic downtown square houses the county courthouse. It is at the intersection between Commerce Street and U.S. 51.
The Chickasaw people were already living in this area since long before the Spanish and French colonists arrived. France had established colonial settlements along this coast, to the north of the middle Mississippi River in what was known as the Illinois Country and New France (present-day Quebec, Canada). A French colonial loghouse from 18th century in Hernando (see the first photo in the gallery below) is a reminder that typical dwellings were built in their settlements in Illinois, such as Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. French Canadians and French French had extensive trading relationships with many American Indian tribes, including Natchez.
The Chickasaw signed a treaty in which they would cede large swathes of their land to the United States in response to the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The majority of the tribe was removed to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River.
