Portsoy, Scottish Gaelic: Port Saoidh [2] is a Scottish town located in Aberdeenshire. Portsoy used to be in Banffshire. Port Saoithe may have been the original name, which means \"saithe harbor\". [3] Portsoy can be found on the Moray Firth coast in northeast Scotland, 50 mi (80 km) northwest from Aberdeen and 65 mi (105 km east of Inverness). At the 2011 census, it had 1,752 inhabitants. [4]

Portsoy was made a burgh-of-barony under Sir Walter Ogilvie, Boyne Castle. The charter was then confirmed by parliament in 1581. [5][6]

Portsoy belonged to the civil and religious parishes of Fordyce from the 16th century up until 1975. [7] In 1975, it was no longer a burgh and became part of the District Of Banff And Buchan. [8] Administration was transferred to Aberdeenshire in 1996. [8]

The Moray Firth's oldest harbour, the \"old harbor\", dates back to the 17th Century. The \"new harbor\" was built to support the expanding herring fishery in 1825[9]. It was able to hold a maximum of 57 boats. [10] The Old Town Hall was built in The Square in 1798. [11]

Portsoy is well-known for its local jewellery made of \"Portsoy marble\" (which isn't actually marble but instead serpentinite). To celebrate the 300th anniversary of the harbour, the annual Scottish Traditional Boat Festival was established in 1993. [12][13]

Portsoy has been featured in BBC period dramas The Camerons and Peaky Blinders[14] as well as a Tennent's Lager ad parodying 1949's Whisky Galore! It was also the main location for Gillies MacKinnon’s film Whisky Galore! (2016), which is a remake of the 1949 film. Portsoy represented Todday. [15]
