Newport Beach, California is a coastal town in South Orange County. Newport Beach is well-known for its sandy beaches and swimming. Newport Harbor was once a port for maritime industry, but today it is used mainly for recreation. Balboa Island attracts visitors with its waterfront path and easy access to shops and restaurants via the ferry.

The Upper Bay of Newport is a canyon carved by a stream in the Pleistocene period. The Lower Bay of Newport was formed much later by sand brought along by ocean currents, which constructed the offshore beach now recognized as the Balboa Peninsula of Newport Beach.

The Tongva people inhabited the land for thousands of years in a thriving, diverse community. Europeans arrived on the land in the 1800s and forced the Tongva to be assimilated. Newport Beach, California, is built upon the unceded territories of the Tongva people. They have been the traditional land caretakers for centuries. [8] In the Newport area, the State of California sold acre plots of land at $1 per piece. The area saw significant growth in Anglo-American habitation after 1870, when the 105-ton steamer The Vaquero, captained by Captain Samuel S. Dunnells (against warnings from surveyors), navigated through the lower and higher bays of Newport to unload its cargo. James Irvine, upon hearing this amazing news, quickly moved from San Francisco to the San Joaquin Ranch. Irvine met with Robert Irvine and James McFadden at Irvine's ranch near UC Irvine. They agreed that the new port should simply be called \"Newport\", which is how Newport Beach got its name. In 1888, James McFadden constructed a McFadden Wharf. [9]
