Port Townsend (/'taUnz@nd/) is a city in Washington's Jefferson County. At the 2020 United States Census, it had a population of 10,148.It is also the only incorporated municipality in Jefferson County. [4] The city is well-known for its natural beauty at the northeast end of the Olympic Peninsula. It also has a number of cultural events annually. The U.S. National Historic Landmark District of Port Townsend is located in this historic district. The area is significantly dryer than the rest of the region because it is located in the rainshadow of Olympic Mountains. It receives only 19 inches (or 480 millimeters) of rain annually.

In 1792, Captain George Vancouver named the bay \"Port Townshend\", in honor of his friend, The Marquis de Townshend. Although it was quickly recognized as a safe harbor, strong south winds and poor holding grounds often make anchorage for small craft difficult off the town's waterfront.

April 24, 1851 was the official European-American settlement in the same city. In Jefferson County, American Indian tribes included the Chimakum or Chemakum, Hoh (or Quileute), Klallam(or Clallam), Quinault and Twana (\"The Kilcid Band -- Anglish: \"Quilcene\").

Port Townsend is known as the \"City of Dreams\" due to early speculations that it would be the biggest harbor on the west coast of America. It was guarding Puget Sound's gate and would be known as the \"Key City\", a name that has remained a constant.
