Lubbock (/’lb@k/ LU-@k)[5]The 11th most populous city in Texas, and also the seat of government for Lubbock County. The city has a population 257,141 [6] and is the 86th most populous in the United States. [7][8] The state's northernmost part is home to the city. This region is known geographically and historically as the Llano Estacado. Ecologically, the city lies in the middle of the Lubbock metropolitan, with an estimated population 327,42424 in 2020. [9]

The nickname Lubbock is \"Hub City\" because it is the economic, educational and health-care center of the multicounty region north of the Permian basin and south of Texas Panhandle. This area is commonly known as the South Plains. [10] This area is the largest cotton-growing area in the world [11][12] and heavily depends on the Ogallala Aquifer water for irrigation.

Texas Tech University is located in Lubbock. It is the sixth-largest college in Texas by enrollment.

The land that would become Lubbock, which was in the heart of Comancheria and the shifting domain of the Comanche, was home to Lubbock as of 1867. [13]

In 1876, Lubbock County was established. It was named for Thomas Saltus Lubbock (ex-Texas Ranger, brother to Francis Lubbock who was governor of Texas during Civil War). Yellow House Canyon was home to a U.S. Post Office as early as 1884. Three miles to the east is a small community known as Old Lubbock or Lubbock. The original Lubbock was merged with Monterey in 1890. Monterey is a small town to the south of the canyon. The new Lubbock town took the Lubbock name. The merger involved the transfer of the original Lubbock's Nicolett Hotel over the canyon on rollers to its new location. In 1891, Lubbock was elected county seat. [15] The city of Lubbock was then incorporated on March 16, 1909. The first railroad train arrived in Lubbock that year.
