Staffordshire (/'staef@rd/), is a county town in the West Midlands region. It is located approximately 15 miles (24km) north Wolverhampton and 15 miles (24) south of Stoke-on-Trent. It is also 24 miles (39km) northwest of Birmingham. The town population in 2021 was 71,424[1] and that of the wider borough of Stafford was 122,000, making it the third largest in the county after Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme.
Stafford is \"ford\" as it is spelled by a staithe, or landing place. The original settlement was located on a peninsula of sand-and-gravel that served as a crossing point for the River Sow, which is a tributary to the River Trent. The town is still home to a large amount of marshland that is north-west. It has been subject to flooding in the past, including in 2000, 2007, 2007 and 2019.
Stafford is believed to have been established in AD 700[2]by a Mercian prince named Bertelin who, according to legend, set up a hermitage at Betheney. It was believed that the remains of a wooden preaching Cross from that time were found beneath St Bertelin's Chapel. This chapel is located next to the later collegiate Church of St Mary. Recent reappraisal shows that this is a misinterpretation. It was a coffin made of tree trunks and placed in central part of the first timber chapel in the period when AEthelflaed established the burh in 913. It could have been there to commemorate or venerate St Bertelin.
