Great Falls, the county seat in Cascade County, is the third-most populous U.S. city. According to the 2020 census, the population was 60 442. [4] It covers an area 22.9 miles (59 km2) and is the capital city of the Great Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. This includes all of Cascade County. In 2020, the Great Falls MSA had a population of 84 414. [3]

Great Falls, a cultural, financial, and commercial center in central Montana, is just east of the Rocky Mountains. It is also bisected by Missouri River. It is located 180 miles (290km) from Glacier National Park's east entrance in Montana. Yellowstone National Park, in Montana and northern Wyoming, is 264 miles (425km) away. The city is served by Interstate 15, a north-south federal highway. [6]

Great Falls is named after a group of five waterfalls that are located north and east of the city on the Missouri River. [7] In order to avoid the falls, the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1805-1806) had to travel around a 10-mile (16km) section of the river. The company spent 31 days in this area and did arduous labor. [8] Three of these waterfalls, also known as Rainbow, Black Eagle and the Great Falls (or The Big Falls), are located in the vicinity of five hydroelectric dams. This gave the city its nickname, \"The Electric City\". Other names for Great Falls are \"The River City\" or \"Western Art Capital of the World\". [7] Two military installations are also located in the city: Malmstrom Air Force Base to the east, which is the largest employer of the community; and the Montana Air National Guard, to the west, near Great Falls International Airport.
