Lucca (/ˈluːkə/ LOO-kə, Italian: [ˈlukka] (listen)) is a city and comune in Tuscany, Central Italy, on the Serchio River, in a fertile plain near the Ligurian Sea. The city has a population of about 89,000,[3] while its province has a population of 383,957.[4]

Lucca is known for being an Italian's \"Citta di'arte\", a town that has preserved its Renaissance-era city walls[5][6]. It also has a very well-preserved historic center. Here, you will find the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, with its origins in second half of 1st Century A.D., and the Guinigi Tower (a 45-metre tall tower, 150 ft) dating back to the 1300s. [7][8]

The city is also the birthplace of numerous world-class composers, including Giacomo Puccini, Alfredo Catalani, and Luigi Boccherini.[9]

Lucca was called Luca by the Romans. According to more recent toponymic research, Lucca refers to \"sacredwood\" (Latin lucus), \"to chop\" (Latin lucare) as well as \"luminous space\" which is a term that was used by the first European settlers. According to legend, the origin refers to a forest area that has been cleared to make way for light or a clearing on a river island of Serchio mud, which is located in the middle wooded areas.
