Nevers (/n@'ve@r/ n@-VAIR, French: [n@veR] (listen); Latin: Noviodunum, later Nevirnum and Nebirnum) is the prefecture of the Nievre department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comte region in central France. It was the capital of the former Nivernais province. It is located 260 km (160 miles) south-southeast Paris.

Nevers' first appearance in written history is as Noviodunum. This was a Roman town that the Aedui held at Roman contact. The site is rich in Roman antiquities and medals, [3] which indicate its importance. In 52 BCE Julius Caesar established Noviodunum as a depot. He describes it as being in a convenient location on the banks the Loire. 55). He had his hostages, corn, and military chest. The money in it enabled him to leave home for war. It also allowed him to transport his army and baggage, as well as a large number of horses that he had purchased in Spain and Italy.

After Gergovia's failure, the Noviodunum Aedui massacred all those who were there to take care of the stores, negotiators, and travellers. They split the money and horses, took all the corn they could in boats and burned or tossed it into the river.

They thought they couldn't hold the town and they set it on fire. Caesar suffered a huge loss and it might seem that he was reckless in leaving so many valuable items in the hands of treacherous friends. He was in dire straits that year and probably couldn't have done any other than what he did.
