Turin (/tjU@’rIn,/ ture–IN, TURE–in,[3] Piedmontese : [ty’riNG] (listen); Italian : Torino (to'ri.no) (listen) is a city that is an important cultural and business centre in Northern Italy. It is the capital of Piedmont, as well as the Metropolitan City of Turin. It was also the first capital of Italy from 1861-1865. It is located on the west bank of the Po River below its Susa Valley. The city is surrounded by Superga Hill and the western Alpine arch. 847,287 people live in the city (31 January 2022 [5]). Eurostat estimates that the urban area has 1.7 million inhabitants. According to the OECD, Turin's metropolitan area has a population estimate of 2.2 million. [6]

It was once a major European political center. It was the capital of Duchy of Savoy from 1563 to the present. This was then the Kingdom of Sardinia, ruled by House of Savoy. Also, it was the first capital of Kingdom of Italy between 1861 and 1865. Turin is often called the \"cradle for Italian liberty\" because it was the political and intellectual center of the Risorgimento[9]. It also houses notable people who have contributed to it such as Cavour. [10] Although it lost much of its political power due to World War II (having been at the center of anti-fascist movements in the Ventennio, including the Italian resistance), Turin was a key European crossroads for commerce, industry and trade and is now part of the \"industrial triangular\" with Genoa and Milan. It ranks third in Italy for economic strength, behind Rome and Milan. The city has a GDP of $58billion and is the 78th most wealthy in terms of purchasing power. GaWC has ranked the city as a Gamma-level international city since 2018. [13] Turin hosts the headquarters of FIAT Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia. [9]
