Mandalay (/.maend@’leI/ or/'maend@leI/ Burmese: Mnttle:; MLCTS : manta.le [mand@le]), is the second-largest municipality in Myanmar after Yangon. The city is located on the east bank Irrawaddy River at 631km (392 mi) (Road Distance), north of Yangon. It has a population 1,225,553 according to the 2014 census.

King Mindon founded Mandalay in 1857, replacing Amarapura to become the new capital of the Konbaung Dynasty. It was Burma’s last royal capital before its annexation in 1885 by the British Empire. Mandalay, under British rule, remained culturally and commercially significant despite Yangon's rise to power in British Burma. The Japanese conquest of Burma in World War II caused extensive destruction to the city. Mandalay was annexed to the Union of Burma in 1948.

Mandalay, the economic center of Upper Myanmar, is also considered the heart of Burmese culture. Since the late 20th century, a steady influx of illegal Chinese migrants, mostly from Yunnan has changed the city's ethnic makeup. This has led to increased trade with China. [4][5][dead Link] Mandalay is still Upper Myanmar's largest commercial, educational, and health center, despite Naypyidaw’s recent rise.
