Faisalabad (/fa.Isa?l,ba/d/; Punjabi/Urdu pronunciation: fySl Abd; Urdu pronunciation : [fe.s@[email protected]/d]), was previously known as Lyallpur, (Punjabi Urdu: Ly'l pwr), but it was renamed in 1977 to honour the late King Faisal, Saudi Arabia. It is the third largest city in Pakistan, after Karachi and Lahore, and the second largest city in Punjab after Lahore. Faisalabad, Pakistan's richest city, is the 2nd largest city in wider Punjab and largest industrial hub.

Historically one of the first planned cities within British India, it has long since developed into a cosmopolitan metropolis. Faisalabad was restructured into city district status; a devolution promulgated by the 2001 local government ordinance (LGO). The total area of Faisalabad District is 5,856 km2 (2,261 sq mi)[6] while the area controlled by the Faisalabad Development Authority (FDA) is 1,326 km2 (512 sq mi).[7][8]: 8

Because of its central position in the region, connecting roads, rails and air transport, Faisalabad is now a major industrial and distribution center. It is often called the \"Manchester of Pakistan\". [10][11]Faisalabad's GDP (PPP), as of 2013[update], was $43 billion[5]. It is projected to grow to $87 billion by 2025 at a rate of 5.7%. [12]Faisalabad contributes more than 10 percent of the Punjab's GDP. It has an average annual nominal GDP of $20.5 billion. [5] Its hallmark is agriculture and industry. [13][8]: 41
