South Bend is the county seat in St. Joseph County, Indiana. It's located on the St. Joseph River at its southernmost bend. The city, which had 103,453 inhabitants at the 2020 census, was the fourth-largest in Indiana. In 2020, the metropolitan area had 324,501 residents, while its combined statistical area was 812,199. [6] The city lies just south of Indiana's border to Michigan.

Fur traders settled the area in the early 19th-century. The city was founded in 1865. Through the middle of the 20th century, South Bend's economy was shaped by the St. Joseph River. River access helped heavy industrial development, such as the Studebaker Corporation, Oliver Chilled Plow Company and other large corporations.

South Bend's population declined after 1960 when it reached 132,445. This was due to the decline of Studebaker and other heavy industries, as well as migration to suburbs. Today, South Bend's largest industries are tourism, health care and education. Crowe, Honeywell and AM General are the remaining large corporations that have their headquarters in the region. The University of Notre Dame influences the city's culture and economy. [8]
