St. Louis (/seInt/lu/Is, s@nt/lu/Is/)[10]is the second-largest Missouri city. It is located near the confluence between the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. The city itself had a population in 2020 of 301,578,[8] and the bi-state metropolitan region, which extends into Illinois had an estimated population in excess of 2.8 million. This makes it the largest metro area in Missouri, second in Illinois, 20th in the United States.

The area was an important center for Native American Mississippian culture before European settlement. St. Louis was established by French fur traders Gilbert Antoine de St. Maxent [11] Pierre Laclede, Auguste Chouteau and Auguste Chouteau on February 14, 1764. The name Louis is a tribute to Louis IX of France. The area was given to Spain in 1764 after France lost the Seven Years' war. It was resold to France in 1800. Three years later, the United States purchased it as part of the Louisiana Purchase. [12] The city was the starting point for the Corps of Discovery's Lewis and Clark Expedition. St. Louis was a major port along the Mississippi River in the 19th century. It was fourth largest city in the United States from 1870 to the 1920 census. It became an independent city in 1877 after it was separated from St. Louis County. This allowed it to limit its political borders and become an independent country. It hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904 and the Summer Olympics in 1904.
