Saint Charles, also known as St. Charles, is a Missouri city and the county seat in St. Charles County. [2] At the 2010 census, the population was 65,794, making St. Charles the ninth largest city in Missouri. St. Charles is located on the Missouri River and is a suburb north of St. Louis.

Louis Blanchette, a French Canadian fur trader, founded the city as Les Petites Cotes in 1769. After France's defeat during the Seven Years' war, this former French territory west of the Mississippi River was nominally controlled by Spain. France had given its eastern territories over to Great Britain. St. Charles is Missouri's third oldest city. It was a major river port during the United States' westward expansion. This included trade with Native American tribes along the Missouri River. It was the beginning point of the Boone's Lick Road, which led to the Boonslick.

St. Charles was settled primarily by French-speaking colonists from Canada in its early days. In 1804 the Lewis and Clark Expedition considered this settlement the last "civilized" stop before they headed upriver to explore the western territory that the United States acquired from France in the Louisiana Purchase.[4]
