Guntersville, formerly Gunter's Ferry, and later Gunters Landing, is a county seat in Marshall County, Alabama. The city's population was 8,553 at the 2020 census. [4] Guntersville, as designated by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

John Gunter (1765-1835), a great-grandfather to American humorist Will Rogers, founded Guntersville. [5] Gunter's own great-great-grandfather, of Welsh-English descent, had emigrated to the New World in 1644. Gunter was the rich owner of a salt mine at the beginning of the 19th century. Gunter made a deal to acquire more land to mine. He also hired servants from the Cherokee tribe. Gunter married Ghe-No-Heli (aka Katy and Cathrine), the chief of the tribe (Chief Bushyhead, Paint Clan). He also agreed to donate salt to the tribe. Gunter was the name of a town that grew up near the mine. Every July, Guntersville hosts a festival to honor Will Rogers. It includes many activities that were important to Rogers. [citation needed]

Incorporated as \"Gunter’s Landing\" in 1848. It won the contest to be the county seat over Warrenton, which had been the seat since the year 1841. In 1854, it officially changed its name from Guntersville to Guntersville. [6]

In late 1864, the United States Navy started operating a fleet gunboats along the Tennessee River. Confederate troops led a determined defense of the river at Guntersville. The USS General Grant tried to demolish the town as a retaliation in January 1865. [7]
