Yangon (Burmese pronunciation: rnkun) is the capital of the Yangon Region. It's pronounced [jaWgoUW.mjo] and lit. Yangon (Burmese: rnkun; pronounced [jaWgoUW mjo]), is the capital of Yangon Region. It was previously known as Rangoon. Yangon was the capital of Myanmar from 2006 to 2006. The military government moved administrative functions to Naypyidaw, a purpose-built capital in northern Myanmar. Yangon, Myanmar's largest city and most important commercial hub, is home to more than 7 million people.
Yangon has the most colonial-era buildings of Southeast Asia [6] and a unique urban core from colonial era that remains remarkably intact. [7] The colonial-era commercial center is located around the Sule Pagoda. It is believed to be more than 2,000 years old. [8] The city also houses the Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanmar's most revered and most famous Buddhist pagoda.
Yangon was where Bahadur Shah II, the last Mughal Emperor, was exiled by the British after the Indian Rebellion in 1857. [9]
Yangon suffers from deeply inadequate infrastructure, especially compared to other major cities in Southeast Asia, such as Jakarta, Bangkok or Hanoi. Though many historic residential and commercial buildings have been renovated throughout central Yangon, most satellite towns that ring the city continue to be profoundly impoverished and lack basic infrastructure.[10]
