Glasgow (UK: [gla:zgoU]], 'glaez, ’gla:s–, &glaes-/ GLA[H]Z-goh] or Glesga['glezg@] Scots: Glaschu ['klGas@xu]), is the largest city in Scotland, and fourth in terms of population. It also happens to be the 27th-largest European city. It had a population of 635kilo people in 2020. The city is located on the border of historic Lanarkshire County and Renfrewshire. It now forms the Glasgow City Council Area, one of 32 Scottish council areas. It is managed by Glasgow City Council. It is located in the country's West Central Lowlands, on the River Clyde.
From a small settlement on the River Clyde, Glasgow has grown to be the largest seaport of Scotland and the tenth-largest by tonnage in Britain. It was founded in 15th-century as a medieval royal burgh and bishopric. Later, the University of Glasgow was established. This made it a key centre of the Scottish Enlightenment. The city grew to become one of the main hubs for transatlantic trade between Britain and North America, especially in the 18th century. The Industrial Revolution brought about rapid growth in population and economics. Glasgow became one of the most important centres for chemicals, textiles, and engineering. This was especially true of the shipbuilding and marine engineering industries, which produced many of the most famous and innovative vessels. For much of the Victorian, Edwardian and post-war eras, Glasgow was the \"Second City of the British Empire\". [8][9][10][11]
