Bismarck (/bIzma.rk/), is the capital and county seat of Burleigh Country in the U.S. State of North Dakota. It is second in population after Fargo. According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 73,622,[4] and its metropolitan population was 133.626. Forbes magazine named Bismarck the seventh-fastest-growing small town in the United States in 2020. [5][6]

European-Americans founded Bismarck in 1872, on the east bank the Missouri River. Since 1889, when North Dakota was formed from the Dakota Territory and made a state, Bismarck has been the capital of the state.

Bismarck, named after an area Native American tribe, is located across the river. [7] These two cities form the heart of the Bismarck–Mandan Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The North Dakota State Capitol is in central Bismarck. The state government employs more than 4,600 in the city. As a hub of retail and health care, Bismarck is the economic center of south-central North Dakota and north-central South Dakota.

Present-day central North Dakota has been inhabited for thousands of years by Native Americans who have created countless cultures. The area was inhabited by the Mandan Native American tribe long before Europeans arrived. Bismarck's Hidatsa name is mirahacii-arumaaguash. [9]
