Des Moines is the capital of the United States state of Iowa and also the largest city. It is also the county head of Polk County. Warren County is also a small portion of the city. It was established as Fort Des Moines on September 22, 1851. In 1857, it was abbreviated to \"Des Moines\". It is situated on the Des Moines River and was named after it. This name likely came from Riviere des Moines in French, which means \"River of the Monks\". According to the 2020 census, the city had a population of 214,133. [6] According to the 2019 Census Bureau estimate, the six-county metropolitan region is ranked 83rd in America in terms of the number of residents. It has 699,292 residents.
