Omaha (/'oUm@ha/ OH-m@hh) is the capital city of the U.S state of Nebraska. It also serves as the county seat for Douglas County. [5] Omaha lies in the Midwestern United States, at about 10 miles (15 km) north from the Platte River. Omaha was the 39th largest city in the nation, with 486,051 people. [6]

Omaha is the center of the eight-county metropolitan area Omaha-Council Bluffs. With a population of 967 604., the Omaha Metropolitan Area is the 58th largest in the United States. [3] According to 2020 estimates, the Omaha-Council Bluffs–Fremont, NE–IA Combined Statistical Area was 1,004,771. The Greater Omaha region is home to approximately 1.5 million people. Omaha's pioneer years began in 1854 when speculators from Iowa, Council Bluffs, founded the city. The Missouri River was the site of the city's founding. Lone Tree Ferry, a crossing that allowed for the passage of people, earned the city the nickname \"Gateway to the West\". This new West was introduced to the world by Omaha in 1898 when it hosted the Trans-Mississippi Exposition. Omaha's central position in the United States made it an important transportation hub during the 19th century. The city's railroads and breweries were also important throughout the remainder of the 19th century. The Omaha Stockyards, once one of the largest in the world, gained international fame in the 20th century.
