Pinellas County in Florida is home to St. Petersburg. The population of St. Petersburg was 258,308 at the 2020 census. This makes it the fifth-most populous Florida city and the second-largest in the Tampa Bay Area after Tampa. It is the largest city outside of a county seat. The Pinellas County seat is Clearwater. These cities, along with Clearwater are part of Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area, the second-largest in Florida with a population of around 2.8 million. [6] St. Petersburg lies on the Pinellas Peninsula between Tampa Bay, the Gulf of Mexico and is connected to mainland Florida to its north. [7]

St. Pete is a common name for the city among locals. After a vote of its residents, neighboring St. Pete Beach was formally abbreviated in 1994. St. Petersburg has a mayor and a city council. [8]

It is known as \"The Sunshine City\" because it receives an average 361 days of sunlight each year and holds a Guinness World Record of 768 consecutive days of sun (768 days between 1967-1969). The average water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico is 76 degrees F (24 degrees Celsius). The city is a popular retirement destination due to its excellent weather. However, in recent years, the population has been moving in a younger direction. [12]
