Del Mar is a California beach town located along the Pacific Ocean coast in San Diego County. The city was founded in 1885 as a resort at the seaside. It was incorporated in 1959. Every summer, the Del Mar Horse Races take place at the Del Mar Racetrack.
Colonel Jacob Taylor bought 338 acres (1.37km2) from Enoch Talbert in 1885 with the vision of creating a resort at sea for the wealthy and famous. [6] During World War II, the United States Navy maintained a Naval Auxiliary Air Facility at Del Mar for blimps. [7] The population was 3954, down from 4161 in the 2010 census. [5]
It is home to a large population that lives along the coast and on the bluffs overlooking the ocean. These properties are vulnerable to climate change. This has resulted in sea level rise and subsequent coast erosion. Already, transportation infrastructure is under threat. The climate change adaptation plan for the city excludes managed retreat from the options. This is despite it being recommended by the California Coastal Commission (2019). [8][9]
Theodore M. Loop and Ella, a railroad official, first settled Del Mar in the 1880s. The site's name was given by Ella, who took inspiration from Bayard Taylor’s poem \"The Fight of Paso del Mar\". [10] Del Mar was founded in 1885 by another settler, \"Colonel Jacob Taylor\", who purchased the land from Enoch Talbert. [11]
