Monterey (/.mant@’reI/ (listen), MON-t@–RAY; Spanish pronunciation: Monterrey; Ohlone pronunciation: Aacistak][11] is a California city that lies on the Southern Coast of California's Central Coast. It was founded June 3, 1770 and served as the capital of Alta California from 1804-1821. Monterey was home to California's first theater and public building, as well as a public library, printing press, school, and public library. In California, it was the only port of entry to all taxable goods. During the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), the flag of the United States was raised above the Customs House in 1846. In 1849, California hosted its first constitution convention at Monterey after Mexico had ceded California to America.

The 8.466 sq mile (21.93km2) of the city's land area is covered. The city hall is located at 26 feet (8m) above the sea level. [8] According to the 2020 census, there were 30,218 people.

Since the late 19th century, Monterey and its surrounding areas have attracted artists. Many famous painters and writers have been residents of the area. There was a lot of fishery until the 1950s. Monterey's current attractions include Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf as well as the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row.
