Ålesund (Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈôːɫəsʉn] (listen)) sometimes spelt in English as Aalesund, is a municipality in Møre og Romsdal County, Norway. It is part of the traditional district of Sunnmøre and the centre of the Ålesund Region. The town of Ålesund is the administrative centre of Ålesund Municipality, as well as the principal shipping town of the Sunnmøre district. The town is a sea port and is noted for its concentration of Art Nouveau architecture. Although sometimes internationally spelled by its older name Aalesund, this spelling is obsolete in Norwegian. However, the local football club Aalesunds FK still carries that spelling, having been founded before the official change.

The municipality covers 99 kilometres (38 mi) and is the 184th most populous by area of all 356 Norwegian municipalities. Alesund, with its 66,258 inhabitants is the 13th-most populous municipality in Norway. The population density of the municipality is 109.1 people per square kilometre (283/sq mi). Its population has grown by 12.1% in the past 10 years. [4][5]

The port of Aalesund received limited ladested rights in 1793. In 1824, full ladested rights were granted to the port of Aalesund. In 1835, Alesund had 482 inhabitants. [6] The new formannskapsdistrikt legislation, which granted limited local autonomy to all Norwegian parishes, went into effect on January 1, 1838. The small ladested in Aalesund was made a small municipality and had its own council. It was surrounded and governed by the large rural municipality Borgund. It was elevated to the status a kjopstad in 1848, which is a more important market place.
